About CGTS

Who We Are

Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta, Ogun State situated at Grammar School Bus Stop, CGTS Campus, Old Funaab Compound, beside St. John’s Anglican Church, Igbein, Abeokuta was established by the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) during the Primacy of His Grace, The Most Revd. Dr. Peter Jasper Akinola, CON, in further contribution to her pioneering ventures in formal and theological education in Nigeria. It is a learning and research centre for sound and orthodox Theology for Anglicans in particular and all Christians in general.

This project began in 2009 with a Language School where Postulants in all Nigerian Anglican Seminaries in the Centre for Language Ministerial Studies namely: St. Paul’s Theological College, Awka; Immanuel College, Ibadan; Trinity College, Umuahia; St. Francis of Assisi, Wusasa; Archbishop Vining College, Akure; Bishop Crowther College of Theology, Okene and Ezekiel College Ekpoma are trained for one year, to speak the three major Nigerian languages that will facilitate their ministry to virtually all areas of the country. The Project began with 219 Postulants from the above seven theological colleges for language school and 53 students for Postgraduate Diploma in theology (PG.Th), Master of Divinity (M.Div) and Master of Theology (M.Th).

The initial rationale behind the establishment of the Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary is to foster the integration of the Church and to break down the language/ethnic/tribal barriers that have hitherto impeded the operations of the national Church. The present effort being made to enlarge the vision by the establishment of a theological centre of excellence is in accordance with the expressed desires of the orthodox fathers of the Church globally; as in Resolutions of the All African-Anglican Bishops 2004 Conference (Lagos), The 2008 'Global Anglican Future Conference' (GAFCON-Jerusalem) and the 2008 General Synod of the Church of Nigeria.

The School operates the following Centres: Centre for Advanced Theological Studies; Centre for Anglican Communion Studies; Centre for Languages and Ministerial Studies; Centre for Mission Studies, Centre for Church Music and Centre for Distance Learning. It will offer these programmes variously at Certificate, Diploma and Postgraduate Degree levels. The ultimate aim is to equip the saints for effective ministry, holy living and sound faith. The Centres of the School among other things focus on the delivery of quality study programmes on contemporary Theological and Anglican Communion Studies. The School also caters for training and retraining of Bishops, Clergy and the Laity in various contemporary subjects including Theology, Biblical Studies, Church Historian, Leadership, Missions, and Anglican Communion Studies. The School draws upon the best Theologians/Scholars from among its Bishops, Clergy and Laity.

It is a centre for sound Theology based upon the Authority of Scripture, the Lordship of Jesus Christ, biblical ethics and conservative dogma consistent with evangelical mission of the Church in a world beset by secular revisionism and in need of positive spirituality. The Crowther School is open to students of all church denominations from all over the world. It operates with a rich faculty of world class scholars drawn from various backgrounds with sound theological training. The School is located on the site of the historic ‘Abeokuta Grammar School’, an old CMS educational institution belonging to the Church of Nigeria with good study environment.
